This has that heartland rock sound that you may find in good bar bands, but is consistently a cut above.”

Och jag kan efter upprepade spelningar de senaste veckor lova att den är helt omistlig för alla med stor plats i hjärtat för mixen av de här musikaliska ingridienserna. (And I can after numerous listenings the last couple of weeks, promise that it (the record) is an absolute must for all with a special place in their hearts for this mixture of these musical ingredients)”

About Us

Riddle & The Stars is a collaborative project between Australian singer/ songwriter Ben Riddle and The Fallen Stars, an Americana duo featuring Bobbo and Tracy Byrnes from Southern California.

After initially meeting as tour mates in Germany,  the three artists discovered an unexpected kinship, both musically and personally.  A few months later, Ben flew from Australia to California for a whirlwind 17-day recording session, resulting in “This is Happening,” their first album together. Drawing from a range of Indie, Americana and Folk influences, the music is layered with vocal harmonies along with rootsy instrumentation, such as the tenor guitar, pedal steel and cajon. One fan described their rich, dynamic sound as  “Fleetwood Mac meets The Waterboys."

On their sophomore album, “New Coastline," the band took a very different approach to the process. Working from opposite ends of the world, Bobbo, Tracy and Ben would send tracks via the internet and Skype their writing sessions together. From this simultaneous closeness and distance rose a theme of searching for home that runs throughout the album. What does home mean? Where can it be found? Or, as in their first single “Long Way Down,” is finding your sense of home and belonging far more about the person you are with than any place you could find on a map?

Even just ten years ago, a collaborative project like this could not have survived. Now with today’s technology, Riddle and the Stars are demonstrating the universal power of travel, music and friendship to bring the world ever closer together.

Latest News

September 5, 2018

It's been over a year since I've posted or updated here.  Sorry about that.

In that time:

Tracy and Bobbo released a new Firefly EP for their "Leaves on the Wind Music Project"

Ben has released a new solo album "Nidelk".

Bobbo has released a new solo album "Two Sides To This Town".

But what about Riddle & The Stars?

I'm glad you asked. We will be getting together in October for two shows in the northeast of America - New Hampshire and Massachusetts and then Ben and Bobbo will travel across the U.S. playing a few shows and then we will be working on new material in California after that and finishing up with a single Southern California show on November 10.

That's our news.

March 15, 2017

Hey, you might have noticed there's not a lot of shows posted on our site right now - rest assured, it's not because we don't have any booked - it's because I'm looking into calendar options for the site to make it easy to post the shows.  Currently I'm trying to use Songkick but so many of the venues are not in the database that I'm having to enter in all the information for them.  It's very time consuming and frustrating.

January 1, 2017

It's been a minute huh?  We're all in different countries again.  Tracy and I in Southern California and Ben is in Melbourne, Australia.

We're gearing up for a return to Europe in 2017.  Not sure on details as of yet.

Here's a fun review that we can't read. (It's in Hungarian)

Talk to you soon.

October 17, 2016

That's German for good day, good morning or something.  Like all things - it's very similar but still quite different.

We're still a couple weeks away from being back in the states but I wanted to stop in and say hello.

I've been here touring since the end of August supporting my solo album "Motel Americana" and Tracy flew over the end of September and we met up with our buddy Ben Riddle (creating the pseudo Wonder Twin Power form of Riddle & The Stars) and we've been all over playing shows.

I thought it would be nice to not be in the U.S. during the run up to this election but everyone here wants to talk about it.  I had an hour long radio show and interview in Chemnitz, Germany that was 25% about the Presidential election.  It puts you in an interesting place when you're in a foreign country and are asked to speak for and represent your fellow Americans.

Oh, and remember that link I sent you about voting for our song "Hold Me" for Song of the Year?  Well, interestingly - I got an email on my facebook page from someone in Serbia guaranteeing me all the winning votes I would need for just $300.*  I was obviously disturbed by this and kept pressing them for more information about themselves and then gave the info to the folks at The Miews who run the contest. To their credit they are looking into it and have had some issues with folks and cheating/voting going on.  He said to me that they just wanted to do something good to support Indie music and they've had to deal with all kinds of crap.  So the voting aspect of it may go away entirely.

If you're reading this and are in Europe - we still have a bunch of shows left including Immanuel Church this week and Club Moments on Sunday.

And if you're in the US of A - here's a quick breakdown of what's going on in the next month(s).

Wednesday, Nov 2
The Pasta Loft
Milford, NH
w/ Morgan Keating

Wednesday, Nov 16
Barley House
Dallas, TX
w/ Professor Fuzz (Mike Farmer)  and Ronnie Fauss!

Saturday, Nov 19
College Radio Days
Long Beach, CA. (More info soon)

Monday, Nov 21
Americana Mondays at @beatnik Bandito Music Emporium
Santa Ana, CA
w/ Patty Booker and Deja Nichole

Saturday, Dec 3
Gram Parsons Birthday Celebration (GramFest)
Don the Beachcombers
Huntington Beach, CA

Sunday, Dec 4
Courtney Chambers Live Album recording
(Tracy and I will be opening up for CC and this will be at our studio)
Costa Mesa, CA

And then I think we're off until January when I will be scheduling a cd release show locally for "Motel Americana" and it will be released worldwide on Songs & Whispers Records in January of 2017.

I think that's all that's going on.  I am keeping a really fun tour diary on my personal FB page at www.facebook.com/BobboByrnes if you feel like following along.

Ok, it's almost 3 am here in Bremen, Germany.  Time for bed.

Bis Spater.

~Bobbo, Tracy and Ben.

*The person who guaranteed votes even went ahead and got me 50 votes as a show of good faith that she could easily do this.  I of course told the folks at Miews to not count the last 50 votes I got.

August 22, 2016

2 things today:

1) We will have our October tour dates listed by Wednesday and hopefully we are coming to your town!  Well, as long as your town is in Europe, mostly Germany and Vienna.

2) Dig this - Review from Strutter Magazine:

Riddle & The Stars is a collaborative project between Australian singer/ songwriter Ben Riddle and The Fallen Stars, an Americana duo from Southern California. They met while touring as seperate acts in Germany in a package tour, but ended up making music together when the tour was finished, with as result within a year an album titled New coastline. Indie/Americana/Alt.Folk like Fleetwood Mac meets The Waterboys has been a description and more or less it sometimes sounds a little like that. All combined it is a very spontaneous affair that brings us a diversity in styles throughout 10 songs that musically will mostly appeal to fans of westcoast/Americana laid-back smooth pop/rock in the style of let's say Calexico, Crowded House, Dawes, Wilco, The Jayhawks (A LOT!!!), War On Drugs and such. Highlights are the lovely relaxing Long way down and opener Running back to you, but actually most songs are a pleasure to listen to. The strongest point here are the use of 3 vocalists, each with an own range and together singing some beautiful harmonies. Could become a massive record if they are lucky enough that the big media picks it up! More info can be found at: www.riddleandthestars.com
