Tour Diary - June 22, 2019
I don’t know what the hell the medicine is that I took but it’s doing the trick. It kind of tastes and smells like Jagermeister and is called Iberogast and it’s really working on my stomach. Usually when I get something like this I’m down for 2-3 days and by about halfway thru today I was ok.
Today I’m sharing the show with Emily again. (or is she sharing it with me?) We’re playing up in Bremerhaven. Now there’s Bremen and Bremerhaven which translates to “Bremen Harbor”. It was one of the main shipping ports in the 19th century until the ships got to big. Bremerhaven has the emigration museum - from 1830 to 1974 more than 7 million migrants emigrated to the USA thru this port.* It’s a great museum where you can look up your heritage, I found my biological father’s side came thru here in about 1884 and was originally from Berlin and his father was from Essen. Amazing stuff. There’s a big statue dedicated to the people that left here that depicts a family with the father looking towards the West and the mother looking back to where they came from.
The Liberty Hotel overlooks all of this. It’s a vaguely New York City themed hotel that is kind of in the shape of a cruise ship. Corneli is our host and she shows us around and is top notch. It’s been a very leisurely day for me since Emily drove. It’s also fun because Emily’s bandmate from Adelaide is here. Tori plays violin and sings with her and she’s what we’d call a spitfire. Upon meeting her we are immediately giving each other shit.**
We set up in the afternoon on the patio outside and it’s a nice set, people walking by and what-not. We break for dinner and then set up on the 5th floor balcony by the upstairs bar and we both play again. As we play we can watch the sun set between two other buildings over the North Sea. We’re fed and wined by this super upscale restaurant and it’s kind of perfect.
I can’t believe that I’m still seeing people I know at gigs with friends/fans at both the afternoon and evening shows. I have a great time catching up with them and I contemplate making Fluffernutters for a festival again this year.
I have to cut this short because I have an early day tomorrow, I have to leave by 10 am to get to the show and it’s an early afternoon show and then on the way back tomorrow night I got some backstage passes to see the Foo Fighters. So tomorrow nights tour diary may not happen until Monday night. Just FYI.
*And now some of their grandchildren are trying to stop others from coming emigrating to the USA.
**She’s a bit like my friend Kyrie but not as cool.
