About Us

Riddle & The Stars is a collaborative project between Australian singer/ songwriter Ben Riddle and The Fallen Stars, an Americana duo from Southern California.

We met on tour last summer in Germany, where we shared a flat and about half our tour dates and we really hit it off, both musically and personally. At the end of the tour Heiko from Songs & Whispers said "We really like The Fallen Stars and we really like Ben Riddle but we REALLY love what you do together.  We think you should do an album and we'll put it out and then come back and tour again."  After the meeting we were driving away and we all looked at each other and Ben said "So, This is Happening!"  And an album name was born.

In the fall Ben flew from Australia to California to start recording the album. Ben had some songs, we had some songs, we wrote some new songs together...  All told, we tracked about seventeen songs in fifteen days.

Somewhere between Ben discovering the tenor guitar, Bobbo exploring the pedal steel, and Tracy layering in harmonies - we found our sound.  Call it Indie/Americana/Alt.Folk if you want.  A friend heard what we were doing and said "You all sound like Fleetwood Mac meets The Waterboys!"

Many friends helped us along the way. Each and every one contributed something special, whether woven through the texture of the entire album, like Matt Froehlich on his cajon kit or Geo Hennessy on violin, or by adding the perfect accent on one or two songs, like Matt Tonge's mandolin, Danny Ott's dobro, Peter Linnane's accordion or Sue Paine's backing vocals.

This album came together in such a natural and spontaneous way - and to know that Songs & Whispers were behind whatever we did ~ that made it easy to be creative.  We wanted to capture what was happening with us, musically, personally, and make a great album that makes for great listening all way through.

We're really proud of it and hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making it.

This Is Happening.

But in the meantime - we have this little something to share with you.  We recorded this song, it's an oldie but we like it.  Hope you enjoy:

So the first bit of our shows has started, we've played 4 shows so far I think.  We also shot a video (still being edited) and today our new records came in (only a few days after Record Store Day!) and we got a new review in the Desert Star Weekly!

Read the review here or below:

Artist: Riddle & The Stars
Title: New Coastline
You might like if you enjoy: The Fallen Stars, The Jayhawks, Dawes

Tell me more: An exceptional follow-up ot their 2014 debut collaboration "This Is Happening,"
the new album from Riddle & The Stars titled "New Coastline" is truly a reason to celebrate the
music-making union forged between Australian singer-songwriter Ben Riddle and Huntington Beach,
California-based The Fallen Stars (husband-and-wife duo Bobbo and Tracy Byrnes).
All three singers are featured via memorable performances, with their blended voices providing an
additional winning element across the disc (particularly on the the beautiful Americana nugget "When
We Ride").  Riddle brings a distintive singer-songwriter touch to the proceedings, notable on the
reflective folk rocker "Running Back To You" and yearning "Tracks."  Bobbo Byrnes leads the collective
through the rousing root's rocker "I May Never Know" and an affecting take on the John Prine gem
"Mexican Home."  Tracy Byrnes sings the elegiac "Apples & Knives," and the authentic country-styled
"Valentine's Day."

Gearing up for some shows pretty soon.

In the meantime, read what Metronome Magazine said about our new album:

From Metronome Magazine-Boston:

Riddle & The Stars is a collaboration between Australian singer-songwriter Ben Riddle and husband and wife team, Bobbo & Tracy Byrnes of The Fallen Stars. Formerly from Massachusetts, Bobbo and Tracy have been living and making music in their home of California for the last ten or so years along with drummer Brandon Allen. In 2013, The Byrnes’ met Ben Riddle while on tour in Germany. Finding common ground the trio decided to collaborate on some original music and soon eleased their debut album, This Is Happening. With Ben discovering the tenor guitar, Bobbo exploring the pedal steel, and Tracy layering in vocal harmonies and bass, the trio found their sound. Now the collective returns with an engaging new sophomore release called New Coastline, that finds all three principals taking on lead vocal hores.
Melding country, Americana, folk and everything in between, Riddle & The Stars have created a beautifully crafted album. Best tracks: the reflective “Running Back To You,” the memorable “I May Never Know,” the fingerpicking mastery of the album’s magnificent title track, “New Coastline,” resplendent with jangling guitars and superb vocal harmonies, and the sweet sentiment of “When We Ride” highlighted by Tracy’s lead vocals. An album worthy of note. Good stuff! [B.M.O.]
